Two things to know before you benchmark yourself against that.
This is a median across tests, not a traffic-weighted average. It answers “what is typical for a store like this,” not “what are the average visitor’s odds across the whole panel.” Panel averages from third-party providers are computed the other way, which is one reason they read lower.
These are optimized stores. Every client in this base was running a testing program with an agency. A 3.5% median against a field average nearer 2% is what an active CRO program looks like, not what the average store on the internet does.
Where these numbers come from
What the number is. For every test we took the control’s conversion rate - the baseline, before any change was made - on the test’s primary metric. That is the “what is normal for this kind of store” number. It is a conversion rate, not an A/B test win rate, which is the share of tests that beat their control. The two get confused constantly.
How the base narrows. ConversionTeam has run more than 8,000 A/B tests. This page uses the recent, audited, ecommerce slice:
- 8,000+ tests run - the full program, all-time.
- 2,288 audited to a clear result across 71 client engagements. This is the census behind the A/B test win rate page.
- 329 ecommerce tests with a verified baseline conversion rate, after screening. Screening removed workflow tracking cards that are not tests, records where control and variation rates were stored on mismatched scales, records whose stored result contradicted their own arithmetic, duplicate ingests of the same test, and goals that never fired.
- 259 of those measured a site-level goal, once cart-page and checkout-page tests were set aside. Those two measure step completion among people already deep in the funnel, so folding them into a site conversion rate answers a different question. They get their own section.
- 168 also had at least 1,000 visitors in the control, which is the published headline.
The headline does not depend on where that traffic bar sits. At 1,000 control visitors the median is 3.46%. Raise the bar tenfold, to 10,000, and it is still 3.46% on 124 tests. A benchmark that moves when you change the sample threshold is measuring the threshold; this one does not.
Median, not average. Medians are not dragged around by the handful of stores with unusual baselines.
Floors. No rate is published for any segment with fewer than 20 tests or fewer than 3 distinct clients. Where a cut fails that bar, this page says so instead of printing it.
All figures are aggregate. Percentages and ratios only, no client names, no revenue.

Read the last two rows differently from the first four. A cart-page conversion rate of 23% does not mean 23% of your visitors buy. It means 23% of the people who already built a cart went on to purchase in that session. The denominator changed.
Flip the cart number around and you get a statistic you have seen before: roughly 77% of shoppers who built a cart did not buy in that session. That is the same picture as Baymard Institute’s aggregation of 50 abandonment studies, which puts documented average cart abandonment at 70.22%.

Direct and email lead because both are pre-qualified: someone typing your name or opening your email already knows who you are. Paid search sits lowest here - sit with that for a minute if you are buying traffic. It is not that paid traffic is bad, it is that paid traffic is colder, and its conversion rate should be judged against other paid traffic rather than against your site average.
